When the first sonic suction devices appeared around 2015, the response from reviewers was unusual: instead of the incremental “this is better than X” language typical of product reviews, many described the sensation as categorically different from anything they’d experienced before. Air-pulse devices consistently earn the highest average ratings in the intimate products category. Here’s what’s actually happening.

Traditional vibration: how it works

Conventional vibrators stimulate through direct skin contact — a motor vibrates at a fixed frequency, and that physical movement is transmitted through the toy’s surface. The sensation is real, but it has two limitations: it only reaches the superficial nerve endings in the skin surface; and repeated exposure to the same frequency at the same point causes temporary desensitisation (sensory adaptation).

Sonic air-pulse: what’s different

Sonic devices don’t vibrate against the skin. They generate high-frequency air-pressure waves inside a silicone cap placed over (not touching) the target area. These waves move through the air and skin to stimulate deeper nerve structures — including the internal clitoral body, which extends several centimetres into the body.

Because the primary stimulus is airborne pressure waves rather than surface contact, the nerve pathway activated is different. This is why the sensation feels categorically different rather than just stronger, and why users typically report less adaptation over time.

The practical advantage

The reduced adaptation effect means many users can maintain sessions for longer without reaching for higher settings. The main limitation: positioning is more critical. The device needs to create a light seal around the target area — if incorrectly positioned, the effect diminishes significantly.

Our recommendation: if you’ve been using traditional vibrators for years and feel like you’ve plateaued, try a sonic device with a 2–3 day “reset period” (no vibration) before first use. Most users notice a significant difference.
