Lubricant is, without exaggeration, one of the most significant factors in sexual satisfaction — and one of the most overlooked. Natural lubrication varies enormously between people and for the same person across different times, hormonal phases, and situations. The right lubricant solves comfort problems, enhances sensation, and makes intimate products work better. Here’s how to choose.
Water-based lubricants
Best for: General use, all toy materials, all condom types.
Pros: Compatible with everything, easy to clean, body-pH compatible, least likely to cause irritation.
Cons: Can dry out during extended use — requires reapplication.
What to avoid: Formulas containing glycerin (can disrupt vaginal microbiome and cause yeast infections in sensitive people), parabens, or strong flavourings.
Our Silk Water-Based Lubricant contains just six ingredients — no glycerin, no parabens. Safe for all toys and all condoms.
Silicone-based lubricants
Best for: Extended sessions, water play, massage.
Pros: Extremely long-lasting (doesn’t absorb into skin), stays slippery in water, excellent for full-body massage.
Cons: Not compatible with silicone toys — it bonds with and degrades the toy’s surface. Not compatible with silicone condom rings. Harder to wash off skin and fabrics.
Use with: Glass, metal, ABS plastic, natural latex condoms (check compatibility).
Oil-based lubricants
Best for: Massage, external use only.
Pros: Very long-lasting, skin-nourishing.
Cons: Not safe with latex condoms (degrades latex immediately). Not recommended for internal use as oils can disrupt vaginal pH. Difficult to clean off fabrics.
Examples: Coconut oil, jojoba, dedicated intimate oils.
A practical starting point
For most people in most situations: a quality water-based formula is the right answer. It works with everything, cleans up easily, and when formulated without glycerin, is the least likely to cause issues. Buy more than you think you need — running out mid-session is one of the most avoidable frustrations in intimate life.
